| Carles Santos has adopted latin for his opera, and this way he transforms into mithology the rutinary life of a valencian post-war matrimony: The thick and opaque anecdote changes into transparent and clear cathegory. Latin in Ricardo i Elena doesn't pretend to be neither linguistically nor politically correct. It doesn't follow Cicero's schemes, what would sound false and empty like a fairground dummy. It's a rabble, wasted latin, like used and thrown away: it's a cacicatured shape of the ephimeral valencian of the protagonists. This latin is like the mask used by the actors in the ancient greek theater: but it is a mask of themselves, alive (Jesús Royo). |
